I wish i was as forgettable as Harley. I frequently have women i haven’t seen in 40 years, walk up to me, call me by name and talk to me. I have no idea who any of them are until they tell me their names. They look so different now compared to when i knew them in primary or secondary school. But I apparently still look the same because this happens multiple times a month.
I moved many times as a kid, the result being that I tend not to run into people that I knew from school unless we actively have stayed in touch. However, I’ve now worked in some pretty insular industries without many different companies competing so I have run into people in some weird places – like in the Singapore airport or while on a train in Germany or at a hole in the wall Australian restaurant on an Indonesian island.
I sympathize with Brie on this. I was a bookworm, too, and I have trouble recognizing people.
I have had more than one former acquaintance from high school greet me and expect recognition (OK – three – and counting). I am zero for three so far. The first time, I asked questions in an attempt to jog my memory. I still didn’t remember the person, but we were both increasingly embarrassed as it became obvious that I had no clue who they were. After that, I changed to telling people I am terrible with faces and asking their names. I truly am terrible with faces. I have run into a co-worker I knew well at the store and didn’t recognize them until they greeted me.
