So many facets to this issue. The small items that are easily shoplifted can be kept behind locked glass for the buyer to select and then can be wrapped in paper and tied with string like was once done.. so many things can be done but people prefer flash and style.
The latest packaging challenge is small batteries in “childproof” encapsulation. Getting the batteries out involves the use of heavy-duty scissors or a dangerous knife. In a three-pack, each battery is entombed in its individual rigid protective capsule.

Time was, that was the case, Herb. And then we invented plastic. Now we recycle since plastic in the ground or waterways lasts just about forever.

A lot of early “biodegradable” actually just broke down quickly to microplastics.
