United Way – I tell my employer that if they want to count my head for the purposes of percentages, I’ll give $1 per paycheck.
Otherwise I would rather not filter my money through a red-tape mill.
I don’t know how much money is siphoned off by United Way, but for some charities, it’s “trickle down.” The money is used to provide huge salaries for the people running the charities and almost nothing makes it to the people the charity is intended to serve.
So do your homework and give directly to the charities you choose to support.
I am not knocking United Way, but even if they take as little as 10% in administrative costs, that’s still 10% that doesn’t make it downstream.
