I’ve always believed that there is a subtext to the act of a child giving his/her teacher an apple, which is virtually never mentioned. It’s that the kid didn’t give the apple out of respect or affection— the kid just wanted to unload a food item s/he didn’t want to eat, and thought perhaps giving it to the teacher might score some points.
