My first driver’s license was issued by the State of New York. It was paper, had no pictures and it had a 26 digit number. They could have issued licenses starting with “1” and still not have used up that many numbers.
I do wonder about account numbers that approximate the population of the Galaxy.
Shortly after getting the license, I went into the Air Force. New York State allowed me to keep the license as long as I was on active duty no matter what state I was stationed in. So when I was in a store and needed to cash a check, I was usually asked to provide my driver’s license as ID. Most of the clerks never saw a New York driver’s license and thought I was making it up.
Instead, I offered to use my military ID. Most of them took a look at it and called their managers who usually told them, “Don’t worry about it. Cash the check. You can trust him.”
I left active duty in 1982 and got a 20th century driver’s license from the state where I finally settled.
