I have been studying Russian. I have a long way to go, but once I learned my way around the cyrillic alphabet I found many of the words to be very similar to English. Japanese is way out of my league!

And that’s why Google Voice to text Translator was invented….

Sam could always learn by having a Japanese demon take over his body, I hear they’re always looking for hosts, very little job competition. XD

To be fair it is indeed a difficult language, I heard since the mid-20th century hundreds of thousands of words have been added to the language and growing. Mandarin is also difficult with far too many dialects to master them all, by contrast Korean is much easier, not too many characters and very easy for even foreigners to pronounce their words.

Hai……simple word for yes……but how it is said with tone and where it is said conveys many different meanings. But how do you say Pop Star in Japanese. Just say Pop Star…..there is no Japanese word for that.

This was funny when I saw it a month or so ago on Patreon in color. Hilarious and very refreshing to see that Sedine is actually pretty smart when she wants to be.

Recently started following in-security, now hooked, because of the art work and the characters. Today’s strip is great, I recently visited Japan and this is an interesting explanation of the different scripts. In my computer days (a long time ago) I once amused myself by trying to get my head around the IBM kanji/katakana sort manual – still recovering…Our tour guide tried to explain how she had to identify the actual meaning of different characters on her mobile phone from their context.That’s before realizing that some Japanese text now runs from left to right instead of the expected right to left. Plus the vertical text….Perhaps Sam is 100% right! But I’ve saved this strip….

I had this same conversation with my Japanese daughter-in-law. I had the same answer, too.

Very TLDR, but the final panel is hilarious.

Nothing like filling in the panels with useless information on a Sunday comic strip. Sedine’s explanation kinda reminds me of the current medical drug information commercials that take about 5 or so minutes on TV. Instead of telling us that this new drug can either make us worse or that it can kill us, they go into lengthy explanations of what the drug ‘might’ do, before death occurs.

Putting hiragana symbols next to kanji in some manga text is interesting, to help children read, but I’ve also read it happens with magazines aimed at older readers too. I wonder how many levels of literacy in Japan there actually are? ie how many people can read all the symbols?

I’ve learned the difference between what I want to know and what I need to know. I just think that at age 69, I won’t have much use for learning oriental languages. . . .

I started learning Japanese while learning martial arts. ‘Karate’ is Japanese for ‘empty hand’, meaning there are no weapons in your hands when you’re defending yourself from an attack.

I soon became a teaching assistant, and the Japanese I managed to learn really came in handy. I remember one parent asking me if I spoke English. It was a very proud moment for me.

I heard this lecture on PBS once. Same thing happened that time. About half way thru the lecture I just Zzzzzzz….

my mom was german, and a catholic school teacher my older brothers got cut no slack if you were told to learn some thing it happen’d , they got to be the smart one’s me not so much, but we had an aunt named Bea so I had to check this comic out, and I’m glad I did!
