19th century medicine knew the body was filled with parts we didn’t need, the large intestine, the endocrine system, and what has the thalamus done for us lately? The fact we were filled with vestigial organs was regarded as proof of evolution. (I’m not denying evolution, just reporting that — as in any other science — the early days were sometimes a bit bumpy. And let’s blame that idea on the bad medicine of the day and remember the evolutionists were just picking up what the doctors of the day were assuring them was true and looking for a reason to explain it.)
