“Sometimes I amaze myself.”
Only once in my life have I ever said that about myself.
I was working the cash register at a bookstore. A customer approached, wearing a T-shirt imprinted with a single sentence in Greek. I looked up, and recited the sentence in English, surprising the customer and myself.
I do not speak or read Greek, but I recognized a single word that was repeated three times. That was enough to let me understand the whole sentence.
The word was:
