Comparison should be between the US and the other Western developed countries. In terms of violence the US leads the list (due to gun ownership). There!

Mexico is a country with incredible poverty. In poor countries, violence tends to be higher. The US is an incredibly rich country which makes our outsized violent crime rate less understandable.
