Too few understand the meaning of Cinco de Mayo. No, it is not “Mexican Independence” (which is September 16). Cinco de Mayo celebrates the true Mexican spirit, when on May 5, 1862 (46 years after Mexican independence from Spain), near the city of Puebla, Mexico, an unarmed rag-tag band of Mexicans faced a well-armed contingent of elite French fighting forces of Napoleon III trying to conquer Mexico, and drove them out with only sticks and stones.
