Cinco de Mayo celebrates the true Mexican spirit, when on May 5, 1862 (46 years after Mexican independence from Spain), near the city of Puebla, Mexico, an unarmed rag-tag band of Mexicans faced a well-armed contingent of elite French fighting forces of Napoleon III trying to conquer Mexico, and drove them out with only sticks and stones.
