I’ve been admiring Nemo’s outfits. Aside from the rather humorous “We can’t stay long” at every stop, (giving the impression of a busy important person;) he sports very popular soft fedora hats, and a militaristic outfit. At the time there were numerous wars throughout the world, but America had been involved in the Philippine-American war and with the Mexican American war (where we won most of the western US, including Texas and California.) Along with the popularity of military schools for upper class (white) American boys in the 1900’s, one can see that fashion was definitely infected with military sharpness! His outfit in panel 6 though, is rather an odd combination of a Panama/Fedora and military togs, including the white leggings, used to cover the legs and boots. All in all, our hero is quite spiffy!
The drawings are the best Cleveland has looked in a long time. Interesting that they go to Wheeling and Toledo, both pretty much forgotten now – except by those who live there…
