Actually doing that is NOT smart. Dogs seeing a hand like that consider it threatening. Best is to let the dog smell you first and allow it to approach you. Then, show an open palm. The dog will sniff it if it thinks you are not a threat. Remember, most dogs have a longer nose than humans and thus see close up things different than we do.
