    Sometimes it’s 2000, but a “long ton” has 2200!

This is why America has to adopt the metric system. There are 1,000 milligrams in a gram, 1,000 grams in a kilogram, and 1,000 kilograms in a ton. There are also 1,000 micrometers in a millimeter, 1,000 millimeters in a meter, and 1,000 meters in a kilometer. Then there are also 1,000 milliliters in a liter, and 1,000 liters in a cubic meter, which weighs one ton.

There is probably a table or list in the front or back of her textbook with this information. I graduated in ‘94, (it looks like this was originally published in ’95 or ’96) and I’m pretty sure all of my Math and Science textbooks had such tables for common conversions.

Funny, I often remember the easy test answer (numbers like these) on tests that I got it wrong. Maybe that’s why everyone remembers the correct answer longer. Like LuAnn’s family.

There’s only so much schools can do about idiots. If someone can’t remember the most basic facts about the world, there’s no helping them.

Luann, the really important thing to learn is how many light years can the starship U.S.S. Enterprise travel in an hour at Warp 5?

While you’re tossing numbers around, just don’t say the number 288 out loud… it’s… too gross

It’s trickier than it sounds. A “short ton” is 2,000 pounds. A “long ton” is 2,240 pounds for easier back-of-an-envelope conversion from a “metric ton”, which is 2,205 pounds.

I guess a lot of people like to keep the familiar word “ton”, no matter how much confusion it causes.

    Geez! It’s 2000 in the U.S. (usually); 2200 if you’re in Britain (usually)….
