This is what happens: airlines don’t schedule flights at 3:30 AM. Everybody wants to take off at 7 AM. So there is the 6:56 departure, 6:58 departure, 7:00 departure, 7:02 departure … When you have 36 flights all scheduled to take off in the same hour, it doesn’t take much to cause a traffic jam
So what we need to design is an airport in a star shape. I don’t mean like typical stars where the vertices are joined but like a starburst: a central point and runways radiating out in all directions. You depart on the runway pointing closest towards your destination. This way there can be simultaneous departures. The flight to Chicago won’t be in the way of the flight to Miami.
