AS RECENTLY AS 1963, IF I SPENT MORE THAN $7 A WEEK FOR GROCERIES, IT WAS BECAUSE WE WERE HAVING COMPANY AND WERE SPLURGING. IT TOOK SEVERAL TRIPS TO BRIG ALL THE GROCERIES INTO THE HOUSE. NOWADAYS, $7 WOOULD GET YOU A DOZEN EGGS AND NOT MUCH ELSE.
This same gag was done on the TV show “The Honeymooners” when Alice complained it was hard to lug a load of laundry down from the roof and Ralph said “I’ve told you not to do that. Make two trips”. I wonder who came up with it first.
