MontanaLady,……. Re., that last part:: When I was working landscaping I was driving the truck back from finishing a job and was stopped by Hightway Patrol officer who asked me to open the tailgates ot the truck. The crew was riding in the back, and when I opened the tailgates, they bailed out and ran into the woods. This was up in the San Bernardino mountains.
The officer proceeded to berate me for hiring illegals when there were Americans looking for jobs. This was early 80s. When he stopped, I told him that I did not do the hiring, nor did I do the firing. I also told him that Anglos would not do the work for the wages becaise it was really heavy work most of the time and the men on my crew were good workers. After a while he left, and I went homw. Next morning the crew was all there, ready to work.
Your comment about the high wages demanded up there reminded me of that episode. .
