“Well, pawn my word!” (as my grandmother used to say — at least that’s how I heard it as a kid . . . it was a shortened version of this exclamation of surprise, “Well, upon my word”).
60s KIMN DJ Jay Mack had these character voices on his show (decades later, I knew more about the sources, which included a deejay in California), one of which had the memorable line: “The first time I saw her, she was standing outside the pawn shop picking her teeth. Thens he went inside and bought the set she picked.”
I can’t stop laughing at Nancy’s face in the middle panel! I just imagine her standing there with that empty grin motionless the entire time he was gone LMAO

Having a kid watch a pawn shop? The crime rate in this burg must be near zero.

Why are three balls the symbols of pawn shops? I know I have the Internet at my fingertips, but I thought I would ask the retirees instead.

Once again: toothbrush mustache man leaning into the scene, only this time sans hat and coat… but at least Nancy got some “pay” out of the deal. ;-)
