In the third panel Olivia just proved that she is a good artist she should use that style all the time

For some strange reason, I’m reminded of a certain episode of Everybody Loves Raymond…

But that third panel means Olivia is being under-used at Andrews & MacMeel and should consider throwing her hat in the ring with a good manga writer.

(HalfCrow is hiring. They’re looking for artists, and have hired one guy to write three webcomics. They just offered to publish a book of my poems. Check them out on www.halfcrow.in)

Wait, so if Nancy symbolizes the trolls on GoComics who always comment on the art, and Lucy is Bushmiller, then….

I love it! They are at the age where they still see what they were trying to draw.

Has there been a case of real-life twins having such wildly different artistic talent?

At a guess, Olivia’s been reading “How To Draw Comics The Rob Liefeld Way” (which consists of a stack of Jack Kirby comics and a ream of tracing paper) only with manga princesses…

Today’s effort speaks to me about “What is Art?”

Notice how the twins see the images as the same, or very nearly so. Whereas many here see only the differences and use them to divide art. For me, I really like the twin’s view…. BOTH are art….. BOTH are valuable.

As this relates to the bigger theme of the comments today…. Olivia’s drawing style of “Nancy” the comic….. as many suggest we now have a demonstration of some of the range of Olivia’s drawing skills. But, while I can agree we see this range, what I want to suggest is that the drawing style of Olivia Jaimes in drawing the characters of “Nancy” the comic the way she does… IS defining and in some ways redefining what it means to be art.

Many see her drawing of this comic as “simplistic” as “mediocre” as not “busty-lusty” like Gilchrist’s work. But, philosophically, perhaps a reflection of our own biases about art in our opinions? I see Olivia’s work and her style here as great art, with a bit of deconstructionism thrown in. Has anyone ever contemplated the dichotomy she presents to us…. namely a comic that has a high focus on the electronic world, the computer world, yet presented in a way that harkens back to stylistically simple two dimensional renderings? Profound in its dichotomy.

Art is in the eye of the beholder. And pocketbook.
