The early American comic panel called Yellow Kid featured his “speech” as lettering printed on the front of his night-shirt looking garment. (What is that bit of apparel called?)
One conventional way of representing speech in drawings prior to the 20th Century was to display a strip of cloth or a paper scroll unwinding from a character’s mouth with the words printed there.
There are two pointer tails associated with the kid from Esther’s earlier school. One rises above the girl speaking, the other extends from the upper half of the panel to the lower half and points to the phone. All straight forward basically.
But creepily, the pointer seems to emerge from her blousy garment, sometimes even taking on its color… which is what put me in mind of the Yellow Kid. (I’m assuming the strip is colored as was intended by the artist.)
Hully gee.
I can’t come to a conclusion about what’s going on there.

The “But alas” is what takes this from a good joke to a very fine joke.

Looks like playing games with friends now is pretty much left to stuff like Roblox and Minecraft. The times they have a changed.
