As the old saying goes, “I’ll kill you for what you said, but I’ll defend to my death your right to say it.” Let us never forget they put the First first. Coincidence? Typo?
I wish all those Nazi/Fundamentalist Muslim/Christian/ Liberal/Commie pigs out there that disagree with the way I want to run the world would learn to goosestep to my drummer! That would be true civility! :-)
@js305: Why you are correct. We did say bad things about Bush. We decried unconstitutional torture, a phony, trumped up invasion of Iraq that helped us fail to catch bin laden, the ineptitude in the handling of Katrina, the unaccounted for billions of dollars cash that was sent to Iraq with no oversight, the crony capitalism and lack of regulation that brought us to the edge of bankruptcy. And you guys complain about Obama bringing accessable health care to millions of children? Or maybe his being born in Kenya? Or enforcing environmental regulations? Or bailing out the banks? (OOPS! Sorry! That was Bush who started that, too. Sorry.) Or Obama running up the deficit? (OOPS! Sorry again. That was Bush and his profligate repub congress.)
Gosh. Maybe we should have ‘fair and balanced’ complaining about our presidents. Or maybe some people should not depend on fox news so much.
Civility knows no bounds when common decency abounds.
We have forgotten that old adage, “Be Nice!”
Heck, even my dog has better manners than some people, let alone Congress and the Media.
The moment the voices go up, the brain content in discussions go down.
And they BOTH want the populace to worry more about who’s going to win the next sports championship or American Idol than what they are doing in Washington!
I am now retired, but learned some things in my career as a police officer, and one of them was that the mouth and the ears do not work at the same time…
Chris: Like, for only one example, Chile’s conservative Junta. They were merely an army takeover, not a “riot” and in fact, many such totalitarian regimes begin with your “excuse’ that the “liberals” or the Poor are rioting. Usually they are rioting because they got tired of “let them eat cake.” and no way to rise above their “Caste.” Unless you are a Hindu, You might want to not rewrite the history you are reading.

Old as I am, I don’t believe I’ve ever heard the “first” part of the “old saying” … I thought it has always been: “I may not like what you said …”

As Darkeforce and comicgos proved, that ship has sailed.

You want the GOP to shut up???? And the other side had never said anything???
Not anything? Not during the Bush years?
Yep, that’s pots and kettles talking to one another…

HAH! He knows us too well.
Interesting side note on the change to “defend to the death….etc.” Shows how far our public dialogue has shifted.
Call me “Anonymous” just in case someone’s offended.

If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything.
Except the opposite may be true in politics and with the media. Ah, the joys of free speech.
