A study showed that a second opinion resulted in 20% fewer surgeries. So, either a LOT of unnecessary surgeries were being done OR doctors are such magic people that seeing two of them can heal you one-fifth of the time.

My late father had a back pain and went to his doctor. The doctor said, “Oh it’s just a strain – it’ll get better.”.It didn’t, so he went to another doctor in the practice, who said, “Oh you’ve just overdone things – it’ll get better.”.It didn’t and he couldn’t get out of bed; so he consulted a third doctor in the same practice who said, "I’ll call an ambulance for you…. you’ve trapped your nerve between vertebrae in several places.. As a family, we changed our GP the next day. The moral being: If you’re not happy with your doctor – see another one.

A lot of doctors and hospitals are refusing treatment to patients who get a second opinion from another doctor. A Tufts University doctor treated a girl with mitochondrial disorder but the doctors in Boston refused to treat her and took her away from her parents because it was a second opinion (and an accurate one)

My in-laws lived for years with cancer in Great Britain. They had the absolute best of care and both died of something else in their late 80s. Not only that, but when the one who was the caregiver needed to be hospitalized for surgery, they put the other one in a room nearby, so neither would be left home alone. The hospital also provided transportation to and from the doctor’s office or the hospital. Not one bill came thru the mail.

One big problem with our health care system is that people are expected to have health care coverage through their employment. Lose your job – too bad, no longer covered; have a chance for a better position elsewhere – plan to be without coverage at least for a time, etc. etc. (That is only ONE of the problems of our system before ACA)
