I could never see how being able to do mechanical drawing had anything to do with engineering. Reading schematics and blue prints, yes. Producing them? Pffft! Fortunately CAD came along.
Mechanize the mechanical pencils to remove the push-button and have the lead stick out constantly no greater than its breaking point. An I7 processor and ATR should do the job.
