I hate hiccuping when I’m eating. Always afraid a bite will get inhaled. Unfortunately, I’ve found if I eat too fast, it seems to bring on hiccups. Sometimes, it is just difficult to remember to eat slowly, when I’m in a hurry or really hungry.
Hiccuping is where the diaphragm that helps you breath works in reverse. And that reverse is how it worked when our amphibian biological ancestors existed.
I always thought hiccups is due to muscle spams in the diaphragm. Caught little on doctor’s show caused by irritated nerves. I would drink hot water to calm spasms down.
The best cure I have found for curing hiccups, Hold my breath and count the time between hiccups, Usually by the time I get to 30 (>hic<, 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10, >hic<, 1-2-3…20, >hic<, 1-30, and gone. I may have to repeat the process once more, but rarely.
The only “cure” is to stop the contrary impulse to the diaphragm is for it to stop on its own. Once or twice I have actually consciously affected that autonomic style impulse. Usually thought the idea is to stop the impulse and the best way is to just forget it and ti will return to normal—mostly. There are rare cases of it never returning to normal.
