Mine was the fear of some unearthly horrible thing looking in the window. I have since gotten over it since none dare show up.

Had the same experience as a 9 year old when I saw Invasion of the Saucer Men in 1957.Heard rapping on the window which turned out to be bush branches in the breeze. Also woke my dad up who gave me the usual “There’s no such thing as (fill in the blank)”.I knew he was covering up though. :p

Unfortunately, when I was 10 I read On The Beach and Level 7. Early 60s, small town, just moved into a house built in 1865. At night it was so quiet I could hear jets, always was afraid of nuclear war because I started school in 1955. Remember Duck and Cover? Well, I sure do. I had nightmares about that until I entered the USAF in 1968-volunteer, not drafted-and actually worked on nuclear missile armed Interceptors. Never had nightmares after working on those planes.

I had uncle had nightmare not from a book but real life when he served in the Army. I do not think uncle and brothers ever read books when growing up. I wished could say name of war location back then. He passed last year age 93. Served late teens to early 20’s.
