Family members are usually the go to for selling school things, then friends of the family. Strangers not so much.

“Sorry, Ruthie…I still have the candy that you sold me last year in the fridge!”

The biggest hurdle I faced selling stuff as a kid was the one that Ruthie is facing. Knocking on the door the first time. Each door after that came easier. When I was in Junior Achievement in high school, we worked in teams of two, and that made it easier still.

I sold candy when I was in Cub Scouts. My most successful sales were at the local pool hall.

One of my grandkids sent me a form letter asking me to buy something, I live 4 states away from them but I do not ever respond to a form letter. In this case 2 form letters. That grandson is only 12, anyway, the only thing he did was sign the letter.

I really have to ask, when did this start and why? My school did not do that, my kids school never did that, but my grandkids schools, especially the ones living in the LA area, send kids out to beg for money.

Never had any parent try to sell anyone candybars at work-thank goodness for that

I was sent an email linked to the school’s fundraising website; which I found somewhat surprising.

Ruthie is a little scared going to the first door. Only kind of selling I did was in JR. High, baby trees. Tulip and Crab Apple. I sold a lot of them. My dad bought 2 and then planted them. Because I sold the most I got to go on a tree planing ceremony for May day, that was fun.

Ruthie – ask your dad to sell them at his office like most kids do.
