I am left-handed. I went to school in the mid-twentieth century when being left-handed was unacceptable. For years, teachers and educators compelled me to try and write with my right hand. And quite frankly, they and I both failed in that attempt. The end result is that to this day, over 70 years later, I have terrible penmanship.
I was in my 30s when I lost my job and decided to go to school to increase my chances of getting another job. I attended evening classes in a vocational-technical school, and we had to do all the same work as the teenagers attending the regular day classes. We had to write a book report in Icelandic class one time, and it had to be hand-written. This was done to make sure the teenagers’ parents werent doing their homework for them, and a number of people in the evening classes protested and wanted to be allowed to do it on a computer and print it out. I was one of those, and I told the teacher she wouldn’t be able to read it if I hand-wrote the report. Her response was: “I have a college degree in reading midieval manuscripts”.

Just FYI – if you can’t read something, trace over it as if you are writing it. Sometimes, your muscles can make out what your eye can’t.
