There was a time in Iceland’s history when child mortality was very high, and parents figured that some of their children would die, and they re-used names. The most common name for boys was Jón (the Icelandic version of John), and there would often be more than one child in a family with that name. When more than one survived, they were simply called “Jón 1”, “Jón 2”, etc.
