It’s a parasite that houses itself in reindeer, causing a physical distinction to make it stand out from the others so it can be eaten by a predator to reproduce within said predator’s body.
I guess a definition of “old” is remembering when Gene Autry singing “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” was just a funky new song that would certainly die out before next Christmas.
