The book Godel, Escher, Bach has a story about ant colonies working sort of like brains, with the ants as the neurons. At one point, it’s mentioned that an ant colony got caught in a rainstorm, and the ants panicked. Even though all the ants survived, the colony-brain was basically dead, the ants having reorganized themselves into a different colony-brain.
