On this day the German Democratic Republic (the stalinist state that was formed out of the Soviet occupation zone after WWII in Germany) collapsed and opened it’s borders. It was also pretty much the beginning of the end of communism in Europe. It would take more than a year (until October 3, 1990) for the Bundesrepublik Deutschland and the German Democratic Republic to be reunified, which also marked the end of the occupation in Germany and formally ended WWII.
