I don’t believe anyone has “outlawed” the bible. What Christians can’t seem to understand is that the government has no control, nor do they want it, over what you in your Christian (or any other religion) does in their church. They can do whatever they want — marry or not marry gays, etc. (As long as it doesn’t involve abuse and I think we can all agree on that.) Since we in America have so many different religions, I think it is pompous and arrogant for Christians to think they have a right to push their beliefs on anyone who does not believe as they do, whether they are non-believers or other believers. So keep it in your church and we will all be happy.
All my fellow atheists must be sound asleep or taking the day off. Personally I see no point dissuading the converted as neither side does any real harm.
Although both parties often get their facts wrong.
Talking to someone about what you believe is not exactly “forcing your beliefs” on someone. Amazing how Christians get accused of that but the standard seems a little different where everyone else is concerned.
@trimguy – how exactly do the proselytizers ‘force’ their believes on everyone? annoy? yes. pushy? sure, judge you? you bet. but no one can ‘force’ anyone else to believe something. Or were you referring to the Christian political right trying to get laws passed so we all have to ‘live’ by their moral code? (hmmm, sounds like sharia law to me)
Maybe we should stop pointing fingers, except upward, and look at ourselves and what God wants from us? If Noah griped at his neighbors, at least it wasn’t recorded.
Does any on believe in the idea that there are planets, a sun and moon, gravity, grass, water, a balanced Nature, and that we are fearfully and wonderfully made…
“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” – (Matthew 28:18-20)
My question is, who knew how God created the world and was there to write about it? One of the reasons I’m a proud agnostic. There is simply too much in religion that makes no sense or contradicts itself.
I’ve often thought how peculiar it is that so many people of the Religious Right deny regular Darwinism (evolution) but believe firmly in Social Darwinism (that the poor and downtrodden are to blame for their own problems and deserve what they get). I think it’s fair to say that enlightened people around the world reverse these two beliefs.
Hmmm. All this… And I was just going to mention that earlier, in the 50s comics, Linus was pretty ignorant, and Lucy told him lots of “her facts.” Now, a short time before the release of their Christmas special, Linus has become well read for a young boy. Hmm. Folks like to press each others’ buttons, don’t they?
“The fact that people have killed in the name of them, and have died defending them, shouldn’t cause us to pause and ask if they’re really necessary.” Irrelevant. People will kill and die for any reason, or even for none, just for fun. (Ever see Jackass?) If religion has ever stopped even one person from killing or dying senselessly, I submit that it’s all been worth it..“Or are we so insecure that we need the comfort of believing we’re not alone, and that a Supreme Being is always in control.” Short answer, yes. Now back to you: why are we so insecure, if not with good reason?.“We can even blame Him for all the disasters, because it was His wrath on our sinfulness. Preachers love to make much ado about that.” Jesus himself said that was a crock — “The rain falls on the just and the unjust.” Those preachers have some remedial reading to do…but you can’t blame the author of the message for distortions by the messengers. Bottom line, we live in a world where bad things happen all the time, and it’s on us only to live, regardless, with justice, honesty, kindness, and humility.
When men wrote their Obedience Books, notice they included a story about how terrible it was to eat from The Tree of Knowledge. Many places in these writings warn readers never to think. Ha Ha! If that’s not Clue #1, then you’re probably stuck thinking faith is something to respect. I don’t. Running your life around things for which you have no evidence and haven’t thought about is just stupidity and laziness. I prefer to run my life around things for which there is evidence. Like Hawkins said, science wins over religion because science actually works. And I don’t miss this “comfort” of having a bloodthirsty god read my thoughts 24/7, run my sex life, condemn almost everything naturally human, and threaten punishment for lack of worship. That’s something men would write, not something a real god would need to put into a middle-eastern book hundreds of thousands of years after creating man. No, there is no god, folks. No sin. No hell. Heaven is what you make of your life here. Help others – there is your real joy. Morality comes from making your own decisions – if it comes from a religion it isn’t morality it’s behavior modification. Think.
not all preachers; yes, a lot of people blame God for things going wrong, but that is a result of sin. Yet, when things are going great for people, they tend to forget about God; sometimes this is why he allows us to go through trials – to remember to rely on him, not our own ways, etc.
1) Aren’t there instances in the Bible of God being angry, while anger is a sin?
2) If God loves us so much, why do we suffer on this earth with sorrow, disease, death, etc.?
3) If we are supposed to treat our bodies like temples, why do some super-religious families spank their children?
4) I’m no historian, but I remember reading that in the Middle Ages the Catholic Church didn’t approve of the bathhouses, so people went dirty. All they cared about then was religion, so they disregarded any technology that could better themselves. So they were happy with outhouses, never washing their clothes, and leaving kids in dirty diapers for a week.
Bad things religion does:
1) Gets in the way of government and politics;
2) Encourages people to have a dozen kids and forget their parental responsibilities by letting the older ones take care of the younger ones- then they can tell their kids, “Do what I say or God will send you to hell!”
3) Gives the mentally ill an excuse for their actions (God told me to kill so-and-so!)
4) Convinces women that their only place is in the home breeding like rabbits and that God likes them better in dresses
we are charged with spreading God’s word and try and save as many people as we can. you should not get offended, we’re just trying to keep you out of hell
Religion teaches you to endure the pain and misery of life while waiting for something better in the afterlife; politics teaches you to rebel against the pain and misery of life; science teaches you that enduring and rebelling are a waste of time: just go ahead and change what you don’t like into something better.

Things to think about about religion:
1) Aren’t there instances in the Bible of God being angry, while anger is a sin?
