Years ago I was watching a French film called “La Degrâce” (The Ugly Duckling) about a girl with “beautiful” parents going through the adolescent phase. She walks into the kitchen with an armful of fashion magazines and the housekeeper says, “What do you want with those?” “Are you crazy? These are the most beautiful women in the world!” says the girl. “Ah,” replies the older woman, “but they’ll get older, just like everyone else—but for them, every grey hair and wrinkle will be a tragedy.”

I’ve never forgotten that.

Alas, I don’t see much future in their relationship.

Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, Miss America and Miss USA were, indeed, an annual event to be watched by many American families…. What horrible messaging we little girls grew up with! Why didn’t my dachshunds turn off the TV?

That funny looking kid always knows what is most important. I’ve always thought that real beauty reflected two essential qualities: kindness and intelligence. Perhaps that is why so many models, actresses and “beauty contest” entrants have never had any appeal to me.

The movement to use “everyday normal” women in advertising has begun.

I’m not beautiful either, Patty.
