Pig: Hey, look. A lemming jumping off a cliff. Goat: Yeah, watch... When one lemming commits suicide, they all commit suicide. Lemming: Loser. Goat: Or maybe not. Lemmings: I get his car. I get his condo. I get his wife.
@ Woody157: That’s right. In that classic Disney film, they shook the living bejeesus out of them, then filmed the scene on a rotating stage. And when they STILL wouldn’t jump, the camera crew picked them up and tossed them over the edge of the “cliff”.
Hey, what do you know. They really are lemmings. Their doing what hundreds in this country seems to do. Someone dies and they just start calling what they get from the dead person.
Last week when that nuero guy claimed to have seen heaven, I remembered the Far Side strip of the guy waking up on the operating table …“and then I saw this bright light…”
Imagine if the videogame “Lemmings” didn’t have lemmings’ wives’ tale to go by. What would they have done? Imagine the uproar if they said, “You’re trying to save kittens that are all trying to kill themselves…”
What I find most funny about this strip is Pig surprised to find a lemming jumping off of a cliff, as if he and Goat were just going for a stroll, where cliff lemmings are part of the usual urban landscape.
Loved the Far Side. It’s one that I wish they would rerun here. They still have “The Race to the Far Side” in SF every year with lots of funny costumes and contingents.
@Alexikakos Maybe its because goat is covered in hair and pig is just skin? Rat doesn’t have a belly button either; now that you mention it, do any characters but pigs have belly buttons in this strip?
In the early 70s, the British magazine “Private Eye” had a cartoon showing animals such as these throwing themselves off a cliff, and one turns to the next and says, “Hang on, lemmings are white, we’re probably wombats!”

So much weirder than that “Far Side” where one lemming in the crowd has a flotation device.

when one lemming mocks a friends death, they all mock a friends death

Darn that Evolution! Look what it’s done to the lemmings, who used to be predictable! Now they’re as advanced as humans!

You don’t want his wife. Why do you think he jumped…

“Far Side” reference and “lemmings don’t really jump off cliffs together” remark. 4:51 AM and you guys already have it covered.
That Far Side was a classic, though, for all that it was based on a myth. Some things are just true in comic strip world.

Personally, I think he pushed him when no one was looking

You know the old adage about death: “Where there’s a will, there’s….relatives.”“If life hands you lemmings, make lemmingade?”Sorry.

Well, I guess that’s one way to disprove that silly inaccurate old myth!

okay, I get his wife is a little inappropriate, other than that though, this is great!

And Charlie Harper’s mother, Evelyn, lists his house.

If Rat had been there, I’d have jumped too. Better to go down in chance to survive than suffer the fate that may have awaited them. ;)

Tough lemmings.

I want to know why the Zebras have not been seen in several weeks. I want my Zeebies back! They are the best part of this strip.

Shame on you, Lemming on the Edge; you should have said, “I get first crack at his wife.” Don’t be selfish.
Sherlock Watson about 12 years ago
One lemming jumped, and the rest went on to do a show by National Lampoon.
Popeyesforearm about 12 years ago
National Geographic didn’t show this one.

@Alexikakos: Pig has a belly button because, unlike goat, he doesn’t have hair to cover it!

They don’t commit suicide, they relocate.
