Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for August 09, 2014
Transcript:
Pastis: Listen. Mr. Davis, I'm sorry about what's happened. Could I maybe give you some money to smooth things over. Jim Davis: Sure. Write down what you make in a year. Pastis: I made that in the time it took you to write that sentence. Pastis: Can I wash your car? Jim Davis: I throw them out when they're dirty. Stephan meets Garfield creator Jim Davis to resolve their disputes

Don’t give up, Stephan — there’s more than one way to skin a cat.

I hope Jim Davis isn’t that rich. Garfield is not that impressive!

Now I wonder to whom goes the “Peanuts” royalties now that Schulz passed away 14 years ago.

Cats like rats. Time to let rat go?

Leave quietly. Then get your revenge by selling “Pissing Garfield” bumper stickers and decals.

Hey, Mr. Davis! Mr. Davis! I wouldn’t mind a dirty BMW!
Give it up, Cartoon-Boy, and throw yourself on the mercy of the Czar!

I like Garfield. Even within its juvenile silliness, Garfield had an attitude, before Doonesbury or Far Side or Bloom County or Calvin & Hobbes. It changed the way comics were done, mostly for the better.

He decapitated rat! Isn’t that enough?

I had that one enlarged on the Xerox machine (yes, I’m old) and taped to the wall by my desk. It was amazing how many people didn’t get it, at all!

I am surprise Pastis could afford to use Garfield’s likeness…unless using a crude looking version doesn’t count but using his name should
Queen of America about 10 years ago
I love the way Pastis humbles himself before the greats.
Fido (aka Felix Rex) about 10 years ago
John -Be careful, Davis is cool with Pastis’ current story arc, but Mel Brooks isn’t nearly as compassionate.
Number Three about 10 years ago
Hey at least Stephan is willing to make it up to him!

Garfield used to be amusing back in the day with characters like Nermal and Doc Boy, but today it’s mostly a snooze. I figured that Davis just turned it over to the commercial guys and collected royalties ever since.
Loved the joke here about throwing out the dirty car!

Garfield sucks kitty litter, and John Arbuckle is the way Jim Davis sees his readers.

Jim Davis has been very, very successful commercially and credit to him for that. But I would disagree that Garfield was the first strip with attitude or edginess. Some of the story arcs in the Wizard of Id were pretty well out there a few years before the launch of Garfield, and if you want the real anarchic original, leave us not forget George Herriman’s Krazy Kat half a century afore Garfield. (On the basis this might be a family strip I will forbear of course to mention the late and great Robert Crumb!).

I thought Shultz told him to keep his day job (collection law).

I get most of the criticism for Garfield, but I can never hate on it myself because it was a such a huge part of my childhood.

Pears Before Swine is frequently amusing while Garfield seldom is.

I’m bothered by rich celebrities and how they may only wear a dress 1 time.I don’t begrudge the rich, but the wastefully rich are awful.

this is getting a little sicko people.

He is definitely not that rich.
