Pig: Are you sure we don't need a guidebook for this vacation, Rat? I don't know anyone here. Rat: Sure I'm sure. We've got my smartphone. Pig: So? Rat: So to find a hotel, I"ll just use the 'Trip Advisor' App. And to know the weather, I"ll just use the 'Weather Channel' app. And to find a good bar, we can just 'Yelp' it. And to get a ride home from the bar, we can just use 'Uber.' Pig: So we're all set! Rat: Nope. Battery's dead. Pig: I shall rely on complete strangers! Rat: Ask if they know a place with free outlets.

I like how Rat removes his glasses to give Pig the bad news. Good eye contact

Is this strip intended to be ironic? All of those apps rely on complete strangers.

Although I do not have a smartphone myself, this is why I carry a power bank (Duracell Powerhouse: http://the-gadgeteer.com/2009/09/23/duracell-powerhouse-charger-review/ ). At least I could call someone with a smartphone, or power someone else’s smartphone.
Mine is an older, cheaper version of this: http://ww2.duracell.com/en-CA/product/powerhouse-usb-charger.jspx

Maps. Newspapers. Good eyesight. —The ways these things used to be done, before people became the locomotion app for their smartphones….

I purchased a pair of double-sized batteries, the extended size back, and an external charger. The phone is twice as thick, twice as heavy, and lasts twice as long on a charge. And on those occasions when I use it heavily and still manage to run the battery dry, I swap in the spare!
