We’ve given up. Stuff comes into the house in whatever containers, and when those containers are empty, they either go right back or go to the dump. We even return canning jars (with lids). And then when we give stuff away that might have gone in Tupperware a decade or two ago, it now goes in either a good container with our name on it, or a cheap throw-away.
This is a self-perpetuating system: Since we have only one or two open containers, it’s easy to track their lids.
PS: For internal use, we simply put a “shower cap” over a bowl of leftovers. These caps come in small, medium, large and huge, 20 of them fit into a quart jar’s worth of space and they’re re-usable many times.
