I know two bits would’ve cost a shave and a haircut, but what about a sawbuck? (As much as English is my first language, I’ve never heard of “sawbuck.”)

Fin, Saw buck, & Double Sawbuck are terms I haven’t heard in almost 20 years ($5, $10, $20 for our foreign guests)

As a kid, two bits would get me a Roy Rodgers movie and a box of popcorn.

Ever since the Samolian economy went off the gold standard, it has never been the same. :)

It’s been a loooooong time since anyone referred to a single bit of currency. Two bits is a quarter of a dollar.

I think the ONLY reason “two bits” has survived is because of the famous knocking sequence from Vaudeville days “shave and a hair cut – two bits”, often used in old movies as the “secret knock”.

Other than housing and medical care things were MUCH more expensive in the 50/60s,when you re look at the # of hours at worker had to work to pay for common consumer items. In 1960 $2 was a good wage, a toaster could cost $15+(a full day’s wages) and a 19" b/w TV $200. Clothing was also more expensive-people use to darn their socks to make them last longer. Medical may have been cheaper but it was also primitive-no ct/mri scans, few chemo options-you got cancer you often died. Housing, the average new house in 1960 was < 1,100 sq feet.
