I’ve backpacked in a national forest that hosts some really hefty orb weavers that spin huge webs. I came across one marvel of engineering once that had spanned a space I paced off at nearly 30 feet between anchor points!
I thought Poncho spontaneously broke into a dub step. Stray strands of spider web are indeed a mystery that only the spiders can clear up. Apparently, this particular spider has a sense of humor.
The real problem with spider silk threaded across something is you run into it, and it detaches, and now you have a fine piece of thread stuck to your arm. You can’t see it and half the time you try to pick it up you miss (you know when you grab it and feel it tugging away).
I’ve told the spiders around my house where I walk and said they may make their webs everywhere else. They do a good job keeping the air around my house bug-free. No mosquitoes, no wasps and no flies.
