Get used to it. Your in public school. When my son was in High School he got a gun shoved in his face by a student who then turned and shot 2 other people. He home schools his 2 children. His daughter is 17 and getting straight A’s in her second year in college.
That’s good for you. But our nation has a serious problem. What do you do with the millions of kids who won’t be home schooled?
Do we let society collapse into idiocy and massive unemployment, hoping that our home school kids can then go live on some other planet?
You are part of the human race. You will live with public schooled adults. They will be your cashiers, your cops, your Alaska half-term governors.
God help you if public education is not fully funded and competently run.
Larhof52 said “get used to it”. To what, exactly? Having guns shoved in our faces? If we ever get used to that, we are truly doomed. How about we do everything we can to STOP the insanity? BTW, it’s “you’re”, not “your”.
Clark, the right wing is not responsible for parents who dump their kids on the public school system and take no interest in, or place any value on, the education of their kids. The right wing has not let discipline get so out of hand that the kids who want to be there can’t learn and the teachers have to be concerned for their personal safety. The right wing isn’t responsible for the dilution of the curriculum to the point that much of it is a joke.
These aren’t problems you can fix by throwing money at them. We’ve been doing that for decades and it hasn’t done squat.
Clark Kent, cjminick is correct, like it or not. The schools have been dumbed down and challenges removed to create a sense of false accomplishment to boost the little darlings’ self-esteem. I was once a middle school teacher and was told more than once what NOT to put on a test because the students might get it wrong (even though the material had been covered).
You can spend all the money you want on computers and computer labs, AV equipment, 3-D holograms, level-3 diagnostics and every bit of technology you can think of or make up. But NOTHING can replace a teacher interacting with the students in a challenging academic environment with ingenuity and creativity. The schools that spend the LEAST accomplish the MOST. Global studies bear that out. Leave your damaged political ideology at the schoolroom door.
Home school is not a logistical option for most families, and most parents are not competent to be teachers. They are either poorly educated themselves, or their worldview is heavily warped by their fundamentalist religious beliefs.
You could build a solid gold school room next door to every kid and supply each one with a PHD teacher and if the kid isn’t interested, he will learn nothing. Kids cannot learn if every class has a half dozen thugs lounging in their seats disrupting the class. They can’t be removed, that would be RACIST.

Night-Gaunt49, the term you’re thinking of is “octaroon”, not “maroon”.

The studies show that more funding does not make better education. Public funding of schools has led to their quality decline, at least in part.
