   A neighbour of ours was sick of the local cat population eating the fish out of his pond so he put a wire mesh covering into it just a few inches down from the water’s surface.The sides of the pond were concrete with logs of wood all around but concreted in at the bottom to keep them stable. He got the mesh wire , cut a little bigger than the pond and turned up the edges and nailed the edges to the wood enough of a distance from the surface so’s it would be hard to see. He had no trouble with the local cats or birds after that, although it was funny watching them trying in vain to get at the fish.

    This is unusual. Growing up in the 80s ALL my friends called BOTH my parents by their first names and I called their parents by their first names too. Of course we had to get their permission first.It was always Mr. or Mrs. whatever until they said Oh call Me mary or Frank or whatever. To this day I feel I should call an older person by their surname until told otherwise or Sir or Ma’am. It’s just respectful I suppose.
