A cd drive was too bulky for a computer that stands over a table most of the time, ports to connect external drives was also too uncool, make phones with no way to expand memory is cool yet to add more memory it doubles the price. That means that if you are on a trip and your memory runs full you can not take more photos, unless you dump the ones you already have in the cloud. Also, for whoever has a computer to work and not just to show off, people still use hard media backups; if that was not the case, every ‘work’ model would not come with a cd/dvd drive, and the workflow and the security of the company would not depend on if they have paid for the cloud services and have a connection available
