My father was the grand master of wrong-gift givers. He once bought for my mother the deer hunting rifle he himself wanted. That fall, she bought a hunting license, went hunting and shot a deer. Then she gave him the gun, saying without a smile, “There. Now you can use it.” I was about 10 years old and watched this unfold in silent awe.
