Rip Haywire and the Curse of Tangaroa! Graphic Novel Longbeard: Gold! More gold than I ever imagined! And none of it's chocolate! And it's all mine! You'll keep the tunnel open until I've stolen it all! Rip Haywire: Ok, you don't have to rush me. Longbeard: You'll help me take the gold out. And then I'll buy a bigger boat and a whole bunch of movers to haul all this! Let's move! Quickly, into the tunnel, boy! Rip Haywire: Ok, you don't have to rush me. Longbeard: No fancy Kung-Fu either, kid, bullets win every time. I've got my pistola trained on yah, so no tricks! I'll carry the loot. You just walk ahead of me!
Based on the chest’s size relative to Rip’s hands in panel 5, I’d estimate that it’s got a volume of about 1/4 ft^3. It’s hard to tell how densely packed it is, but if we guess that at least half of that volume is gold, then it would weigh about 150 pounds.
Rip can handle that weight no problem — after all, we’ve seen him toss 200+ pound minions as a lesser man might toss a baseball. But how badly would it weigh down Longbeard?
