In the first panel, May-bee must be wondering who Rip is talking to. Perhaps Rip could say something along the lines of “Well, May-bee, we made it to shore.” So long as Rip is going to recap to someone sitting next to him, and who is probably paying for his pancakes, why not have Rip address that person directly? Or else have Rip go all the way and also address himself in the third person: “May-bee and Rip made it to shore…” This makes no more conversational sense than the intro in the original panel, but is at least consistent.
