Shrapnel is named after British Major General Henry Shrapnel (1761-1842), who invented a shell containing lead shot in 1784. In 1856, Representative Preston Brooks of South Carolina beat Senator Charles Sumner unconscious on the floor of the U.S. Senate after Sumner insulted Brooks' cousin. He resigned but was soon re-elected!
