Ration coupons didn’t work like money; they had to be used alongside money as a limit to how much meat, sugar, gasoline, etc., etc., you could buy, no matter how much money you had. It was partly (mostly, in the UK) to save resources for the troops, and partly (mostly, in the US) to make everybody have a we’re-all-in-this-together attitude.
By the way, Princess Elizabeth (as she was at the time) married in 1947, but war rationing continued in Britain into the 1950s. It might have continued even longer, but there was a scandal when the luxurious menu of a Rationing Board banquet was leaked; some people, it seems, really liked playing at being little tin gods, and didn’t want to give it up.
