I remember Gaylord Perry pitching for the Cleveland Indians back in the 1970’s when I was a wee lad. Starting pitchers were men back in those days. 35+ starts, 300+ innings, 15+ complete games. Gaylord, Tom Seaver, Fergie Jenkins, Steve Carlton, Bob Gibson, Mikey Lolich to name a few. Not like the overpaid wussies nowadays who are hard pressed to give you 5 innings per start.
I remember dear Gaylord being a bit more handsome. Must have been uglier when he played for the Giants.
Yeah – pitchers had greater longevity then – trusted their defense and knew how to work a hitter. I remember a game, on the radio, early fifties, Yankees and, I think , the White Sox, Whitey Ford pitching – first inning, first pitch – ground ball to second, one away – second pitch, a ball, low and inside, third pitch, fly ball to left, two away, fourth pitch, foul pop-up down the third base line, retired the side. Four pitches, three outs. Pitched the complete game – less than 50 pitches. ‘Course, he wasn’t trying to throw it 100 mph, either.

IDK about Mr. Perry, but the Mets won the World Series later that year.
