Tonight’s story is dedicated to the elderly among us – myself included:
An old man is getting ready for bed when he hears noises from the back yard. Looking out his back door, he sees three young men in his tool shed, packing his tools into their bags. So he calls 911 to report the burglary in progress.
“I’m sorry, Sir,” the 911 operator tells him. “We don’t have anyone available right now. We’ll send someone when we have a chance.”
Miffed, the man hangs up the phone and thinks for a minute. Then he picks up the phone and dials 911 again. “Hello, I just called in to report a burglary in progress a few minutes ago,” he began. “I just wanted to let you know you don’t keed to come after all. I just shot all the burglars; I think they’re all dead.”
Within minutes, several police cars screech to a halt outside his door and run into the back yard, where they find all three burglars in the act of stuffing their bags. As they’re led away in handcuffs, the lieutenant in charge says to the man, “I thought you said you shot the perpetrators.”
“I thought you said you didn’t have anyone available to respond,” says the old man.
Moral: never underestimate the wiliness and resourcefulness of old people.
