So my friend was going away for the weekend and he has a pet octopus. He asked if I would look after it while he was gone and I agreed.
So I go over, and he explains what to feed it and when, how to keep the tank clean, keeping it stimulated, those kinds of things. And then he hands me a spade and says that the octopus has a habit of escaping the tank, and I’d need the spade to get it back in the tank.
No problem then. My friend leaves and the next day I go to his house and prepare some food and toys. Just as I’m leaving, I hear a noise and see the octopus has escaped, and since he has a wooden floor, the octopus has suctioned itself to the floor. Remembering my friend’s advice, I grab the spade and start scraping the tentacles off the floor.
Let me tell you it was hard work, you get a couple tentacles up and when you go to do the next one, one would slide off the spade and stick back to the floor. Anyway, I persevere for a good hour and eventually get the octopus back in the tank and make sure it’s all closed up.
I go back the next day to feed it more and see it’s escaped again. So I quickly throw the food in the tank and start the fight with the octopus. I can’t believe my friend has to put up with this on a daily basis but I keep at it until I hear a noise at the front door.
My friend has returned early and seeing my car outside, shouts hello as enters the house and comes looking for me. He comes into the room with the tank and shouts at me “what are you doing?!”, and trying not to sound sarcastic, I tell him I’m trying to get the octopus back in the tank.
He grabs the spade off of me and goes “not like that you idiot, watch” as he raises the spade in preparation to hit the octopus.
Suddenly, the octopus raises its tentacles to protect it’s head while my friend quickly scoops up the now free octopus and drops it in the tank.
