…especially if he’s wading off the coast of North Carolina.

He should be wearing flotation device, rip currents are in shallow water. I was caught in one. NO FUN!

Not watching every move is one of the hardest lessons a mom has to learn…but has to learn.

I live in NC and have been to both of those beaches. I never thought twice about going in the water, but won’t make that mistake ever again.

It doesn’t happen even after you reach adulthood, for most of us!

NeedaChuckle: Relax, swim parallel to the shore until you are no longer moving away from it, resume activities. A rip current may be powerful, but it is rather small. It is the way the beach keeps all those waves coming in from piling up to a flood. Think of it as the beach’s drain.

Tarredandfeathered: Right, the deeper water is just the result of simple erosion. In shallow enough water (that the sand is supporting most of your weight) you can actually feel a rip developing by the sand moving under your feet. Wade to one side before you find yourself floating.

I recall being in the surf down at Hilton Head, up to about my neck, when I suddenly saw a dark flash in the water, about 3 yards from me. So did my mom, up on the beach. I think both of our hearts stood still until we saw it was a dolphin. (I was full grown at the time.)
